Peel

Year: 2015
Function: Pavilion
Site location: Phoenix Park, Lexington KY
Institution: University of Kentucky
Brief description of the project: This pavilion is based on the verb peel, the action of manipulating a flat surface, creating an open interior covered in a gently curved surface. The pavilion blends into the land at 3 corners and is expanded in height with the addition of a concave cutout into the land, under the pavilion. The surface is sliced orthogonally and pulled apart in order to emphasize the curved lines of the surface and to expose a hallow interior. This exposure allows for light to enter the pavilion at many different times of the day, while still providing protection from the elements. Peel pavilion shows a gently curved massing with a split surface, emphasizing the peeled curve and exposing a light structure.
