Routes to industrial heritage
Industrial heritage is part of our cultural history and it should be preserved for the future generations.
We keep monuments which reminds us about events and remarkable moments from history. We don’t keep just objects; we keep memories through these monuments. Sometimes the memories are replaced by a feeling of respect for meanings that supposed to be confessions of an extinct culture. There are worldwide initiatives coming from associations and institutions to create new routes leading to industrial heritage. These associations like the Spazi Indecizi Association from Italy and Alba Verde Association from Romania focus on the issue of post-industrial urban regeneration through cultural tourism. The industrial heritage can become a source of information for specialists but also for common people who just want to know more about their local history. Although these association acts locally on different part of this vast territory all of them follow the same principles to map the abandoned places. This mapping process can lead to the creation of a tourist guide.
To implement a guide is needed for a strategy . Each association inventories industrial heritage through photography, surveying the building. People who take part in the initiative are surveying industrial area and its surroundings. This strategy can be seen as a first contact with the architectural heritage. This also involves mapping communities around the industrial heritage. Each program conducted by each association reflects on abandonment place and accentuate the need to be taking in consideration as cultural heritage.
These places can be seen as an abandoned museum situated somewhere between the present and past time, no one argues….so, here comes the involvement of these programs to make these places visible.
All over these, the natural space, industrial space and urban space each of them tries to dispute their one presents in human life.
It’s not just about creating a physical route but also a connection between communities, people around all areas. These routes have different forms and reveals local stories. All routes are combining in a tourist guide that brings to local traditions, cultural heritage. Creating a digital mapping or a guide helps the specialists and people who are just curious to find more about the industrial heritage. Spazi Indecizi created a web platform where everyone can add information about an industrial heritage around Europe: www.totallylost.eu
Through all these initiatives a large platform of information is created.
