-FINALIST of SOCIAL DISTANCING HOUSING BLOCK Competition
The Covid-19 pandemic has shed a new light onto the foreign workers’ dormitory situation in Singapore. Currently, the average living area is 3.26 sqm per worker, with 11 to 15 workers living in the same room. This has forced us to rethink the way dormitories should be built and designed to create more conducive and healthy living spaces for our migrant workers.
To control the plausible spread of the virus, we decided to separate the migrant workers into two zones, creating a space that allows for the two zones to remain separate but still connected. The form is derived from rotating these two vertical spaces, allowing for the two groups of residents to remain separate within the outlined space. Then, levels were transformed to create dynamic spaces for interaction, bridging the gap between floors and across blocks, thereby maintaining the sense of community without compromising on interactivity.
Part of our schema included negotiating social distancing and social cohesion which is important to the migrant worker community. Them being far away from their home is already stressful enough for them, hence we strive to design an architecture that eases them into their new life in Singapore by keeping them close to their friends and close to their roots.
