COVID-19 has forced people to practice social distancing. During this special era, cars have become infrequent on the street, vitality of life in each neighbourhood has decreased, yet the eagerness of socialisation still wanders among the communities.
Keeping social distancing does not mean isolating from one another, and tangibility is not the only form of connection. We believe design can give an alternative answer that combines socialisation and distancing, thus we created this project aiming at encouraging people to share a common space at an adequate distance. The scenario illustrated here is a generic street that is compatible with any of it in the world. The street uses guidelines with columns, plants, benches and pick-up stands to remind people about the 6 feet (1.8m) rule, as well as to encourage them to enjoy the local services and interactions with the others. Semi-private spaces for individual office and family parties are also placed on top of the street, allowing those who are sick of staying at home to have an alternative room to breathe. The design of the street is duplicable and interchangeable to fit into different urban communities and shape a more inclusive city in the midst of instability.
