Homelessness is a common problem across the world due to the harsh difficulties that some people experience, leading to a lack of access to health care services that can create health challenges.
Due to a shortage of use of the public transport caused by the pandemic situation, we decided to give life and value to an old and inactive tram by dealing with economic inequities in a striking way. The sanitizing tram acts as a mobile testing facility by collecting possible patients and allowing them to spend a couple of days inside while waiting for the results. The positive tested will be taken to the hospital, while the rest are free to retake their daily life. The space is divided in a central room for medical staff and four modular units with bed, individual bathroom and kitchenette. The idea of reversibility was acknowledged throughout the project to not alter the normal usage of the tram when it returns to normality.
The goal of the sanitizing tram is to respond to the difficulties that homeless people experience during these pandemic times, hoping to serve as an example of managing the effects of infectious diseases and preventing the spread to others.
