– FINALIST of REVIVING MINES: SHANDONG PARK Competition
Mining is an on-going process, shifting the meaning of land from time to time. In our proposal, the term “post mines” does not exist, instead, it is a shift from mining non-renewable resources to “mining” sustainable future that fosters landscape restoration and community resiliency.
Regarding existing and potential mine sites in Zibo, there should not be only one single defined solution to their future. We propose a toolkit based on acupuncture approach as a transformative strategy for the mine sites. The toolkit includes components addressing intersections between 3 layers: Landscape Ecology, Community Culture and Economic Subsistence. Various intervention combinations can be flexibly deployed, responding to different contexts of the mine sites, including labour, capital, landscape resources and culture practices. Diverse productive scenarios can be generated upon a series of intervention patches over time, reinventing the future of the mines and their surrounding communities.
