– HONORABLE MENTION of 2020 Monument Competition
In the network era, we are faced with more and more information but forgetting them faster and faster. We need a monument to regain our ability of insight, thinking and empathy towards the news that reflects daily ordinary painfulness and the social contradictions behind it.
In this project, we collected events that touched us deeply on the Internet platform in 2020 but then hidden over time, and summarized them into key words such as PUA, medical disturbance, sexual assault, domestic violence, depression and suicide, etc. Each type is matched with one corresponding color and placed in the box on the square under the CCTV. With the grid which vertical axis as network heat and horizontal axis as time, events once spread on virtual space are recorded materially and spatially. When people walk through it, they will be evoked of things that happened on a specific time slice that are worth remembering. Professional journalist is connected with citizen journalist through groups of colorful lights that link the top and ground.
The entity space is used to fight against the stagflation of information, the public memory is making up traditional media, and the meaning of the monument is rebuilt with humanistic care.
