-EDITORIAL PICK of FUTURE PUBLIC SPACE Competition
Social Circle is a safe gathering space for large crowds through an upward angle ventilation system. A small group of friends can gather at a circular air basins unit that is responsible for directing wind upwards at an 75 degree angle, constantly allowing the air particles to circulate in a spiral manner away from the site. Through our research, it was found that the risk of infection increases when a person’s air particle concentration is dense due to low movement. Increased movement helps to lower the risk of disease spreading as particles are diluted, therefore running is considered a low risk activity compared to eating. Hence, we wanted to simulate this movement of air particles in the space to allow for more closer safe socializing.
The cool breeze generated helps to provide comfort against the harsh weather in Sunny Singapore, encouraging others to spend time outdoors. The wind could also be useful in kickstarting kite flying activities in the public space. The energy harvested from kinetic steps and bladeless wind turbines helps to power the wind circulation from the air basin, thus creating a more renewable and sustainable energy cycle for Social Circle.
