The Quarry Park Amphitheatre serves as a gateway to a newly established National Quarry Park. Filling the void left behind a disused quarry, the amphitheatre’s seating area is flanked by walled gardens and raised walkways that draw visitors upward to an enhanced view of the exposed rock face. Moreover, the open-air raked seating conforms with the local vernacular of stepped agricultural landscape and the outer steps provide generous open spaces for market stalls that work to provide refreshments for performances as well as passing hikers.
This is ‘Rewilding Architecture’, architecture that reintroduces nature to an industrial site whilst providing a public space that encourages an engagement with the natural surroundings we should strive to protect. The amphitheatre will be home to theatrical performances, community gatherings and national celebrations that can be enjoyed alongside sounds of nature and unobstructed views of the sky.
In line with Xi Jinping’s announcement in September 2020 for a Greener China, the project will be built predominantly by the repurposing rock debris from nearby quarries. It aims to transform the scarred landscape into a landmark that celebrates its mining past whilst becoming a hub for visitors and local communities.
