– FINALIST of REVIVING MINES: SHANDONG PARK Competition
Humans perceive the world through five senses — smell, touch, sight, taste, and hearing. Nevertheless, the perception would never be successful enough without individual, collective and historical memory. Thus, it is possible to introduce the sixth sense: genius loci. All these senses are present in the project of the Shandong Mines Park, which is equally entertaining for adults, children, and tourists. The park called “The Place of Six Senses” allows its visitors to see and perceive an astonishing variety of objects and activities. For instance, there are fragrant herbs, caves, meditation sounds, available musical instruments, viewpoints, tactile elements, eerily alluring objects of art looking like haul trucks, not to mention a greenhouse. Many locations are interconnected by passageways through the mountains. There are local artisans working in souvenir shops, the museum of stones and the park of clay minerals. In addition, a food court is implemented for farmers to prepare meals with local ingredients. Also, the visitors are able to see different objects, located in the territory of the park, that remind everyone of the stone quarry. These objects demonstrate the importance of finding a new effective way to use the degraded land instead of leaving it.
