Crisis articulates the need to reinvestigate and extend the role of the monument both in form and function. We began with a hypothesis that shifts the focus from the ‘material‘ (physicality, mass, representation) towards the ‘immaterial‘ (digitalization, space, simulation), but rather lead us to resolve the two into a harmonious hybrid.
“The World” honors life and the common people. It takes inspiration from the working class and the seemingly ordinary. At a glance it almost disappears, then its boundaries become infinite.
The form celebrates the possibilities of digital fabrication and emerging technology in architecture. It integrates mixed reality by transforming into an immersive virtual space that displays curated media about the demands, revolts and wonders of the masses. Self-conscious and fully expressive of the current age, its dimensional constraints refer to proxemics and accommodates only one person at a time. Its spatial logistics is structured where access is at best with the presence of a helping hand.
Meaning is not explicit nor stratified. Aside from built space, its reflective void physically and semiotically invites people to be ‘one’ with the monument.
Positioned to reflect the national flag, its prototype is to be located in the center of Luneta Park, Manila.
