– FINALIST of 2020 Monument Competition
Our search for identity has led to the idealization of historical figures that embody the revelation of mankind’s highest ideals.
However, the compatibility of these past heroes fails to translate into the post-truth reality of our postmodern societies. Nowadays the answer isn’t as much a sole prophetic figure that shall lead humanity to salvation, but rather a heterogeneous mix that takes different forms depending on each person, a figure that is both a leader to society and a role model for each individual to attain.
In the manifoldness of today’s age, big data shapes our present and future lives as it handles information about us from the infinite data fluxes that surround us. We have infinite means of expressing ourselves in the abyss of virtual spaces with our virtual identities. Our monument becomes one more of these tools.
The Finest Hour roots all of these clusters into one location in which each individual’s ideals can come to life via the filters that they look through. Thus, one monument gives birth to many co-existing ideals-realities in one shared public space, a self-indulgent singularity that is unaware of its plurality.
