– FINALIST of 2020 Monument Competition
Everything is in constant transformation as time moves forward. But there are things in Nature that change rapidly and others, such as Global Warming, that take so long, that appear to be perpetual.
(In a 7×7 grid of columns, the monument can be an immersive environment that displays an urgent contemporary
topic. And nothing is more relevant now than the rising temperature and its environmental consequences.)
Monuments were always symbols to transmit ideas and located in major cities, they would let people understand what otherwise they can’t see. The monument, like a glacier, would transform and disappear whenever the conditions become too adverse.
(Built out of paraffin wax, each column is more sensitive to the temperature, for when it rises above 37°C it starts to deform and melt. Instead of centuries, the space takes only some years to radically change. The material lets go of the notion of intemporality within architecture and replaces it with an ephemeral state. The columns rise more than 30m into the sky, free standing, appearing only to support the sky – the weather – and all its fragility)
Space will never stop transforming, always inspiring people to reverse Global Warming and preserve the planet.
