Because of their negative impact on the environment cars have been excluded from the inner city. This evolutionary alternative to current city structures stimulated our imagination for a more sustainable urban future. The removal of cars frees swathes of space that can be re-appropriated by inhabitants.
While in the existing structure the crossings are places of interaction among different means of transport, in the future they will become places of human interaction. Streets are dominated by pedestrian flow and greenery.
Our proposal recommends the creation of new nodes featuring urban furniture that can be moved on a grid structure and therefore freely rearranged and adapted by the city’s residents. The nodes can host a range of recreational activities and allow groups of different size to gather together.
With this project, we critique the historical formalisation of the public realm and redefine the public space as a living room for citizens. The new infrastructure will open possibilities for future encounters and for changing collective thoughts and actions. We reframe the present experience of the public realm to promote a stronger sense of place and community.
