– HONOURABLE MENTION of Manhattan Wildscaper Competition
Envisioning a green skyscraper in the heart of New York, our project focuses on the juxtaposition of sustainability in a concrete jungle. The Trump Tower located in Midtown Manhattan, envisioned by Donald Trump, whose politics is the anti-thesis of sustainability becomes a compelling specimen for our proposal.
The project proposes a plant centric design in the stepped lower half of the tower, creating a vertical ecosystem. Re-envisioning a conventional skyscraper, plants are at the centre of our design. The building is divided into five main functions. Stepped retail space, where plant by-products are sold to generate revenue. Office spaces are interpreted for research and storing the DNA of the endangered plant species. Vertical and stepped farming form the food section of the building, which allows one to grow their own produce. Residence spaces have been reimagined as living spaces for plants and public spaces.
Utilizing materials like CLT, Algae facades, and biological fabrications woven by silkworms, ensures the building is sustainable with a minimal carbon construction footprint. The tower consists of a breathing atrium which purifies the air inside, using multiple plant layers. Sustainable technologies such as windmills and rainwater harvesting allow to maximize the climatic conditions of the city.
