To decentre: ‘to shift from an established centre of focus’.
Our sky skyscraper attempts to shift focus from Manhattan’s fast pace, individualism and environmentally destructive lifestyles towards an increasingly climate-aware existence. Not only does this new structure turn our attention from negative proclivities, but also physically, towards Hudson River, creating a new ‘centre’ of the city.
Rewilding and Ecosystem restoration
In ‘re-wilding’ we have taken a non-human centric approach where, since nature is self-organised, the fluidity of a continuos landscape ramp encourages the movement and growth of species, enabling plant and animal life to shape itself.
Subsequently the construction of a tidal wetland restores animal ecosystems whilst acting as a buffer to mitigate flooding and surges. Through this, we also we harken back to the lush Manahatta of Henry Hudson’s time.
Human contact with nature is increased through vertical farming and educational programmes. The lack of specific circulation routes encourages discovery and exploration.
Furthermore the programme is broken down into smaller self-sufficient, multi-functional communities by grouping both basic and secondary programmes into forms of clusters, promoting a diversity of human culture.
