-HONOURABLE MENTION of Non Architecture Award Competition | Category: Architecture

The scope for this project was always led by a specific moment that was repeated a lot inside the building when I visited it. That moment was how the vegetation, with time, was eating the building slowly and was gaining ground. The only thing this project does is to accelerate this process of the building being conquered, keeping the original walls of Cal Casas, always giving the user the feeling of being in a ruined building, but at the same time habitable and transformed, in this case, from a textile factory to a music and dance school.

In this way, what is achieved is to generate a new building within the same original building, respecting the same original structure and even using it in these new spaces, created form the invasion of green, to highlight that the last thing that stands in building is the structure.

These bites that are made inside the building to make way for the green give us, in addition to the visual sensation that was thought in the beginning, an opportunity to be able to illuminate and ventilate these spaces that in the past, were dark and poorly ventilated due to the width of the building. In this way we generate pleasant moments even in service areas or corridors, transforming them into areas where students can feel comfortable and socialize between classes. Feeling accompanied at all times, by a somewhat melancholic feeling, of a past that still lives on.

Project Type:

The main program for this project is to transform an old and abandoned textile factory called “Cal Casas” in the centre of Catalonia, Spain into a school of music and dance.

The program is:

-Classrooms to dance of different sizes that some of them could connect and transform into one. (Floor -1)

– Classrooms for big, medium or little groups to play instruments or sing. (Floor -1, 0, 1)

– Individual rooms to let students practice with their instrument. (Floor 1, 2)

– Group rooms to let students practice together. (Floor 1, 2)

– Bar/restaurant to serve the students and even be an independent restaurant from the school. (Floor -1)

– Own theatre with the capacity of 300 seats aprox. connected to spaces like workshops or dressing rooms. (Floor -1, 0)

-Student apartments located in the old “House of the boss”

-Little professional coworking space located next to the parking.

-Parking

Jury Comments

– Studio Muoto

The approach highlighting the existing structure through its immutability in time seems rich. It situates the project both on a short term temporality as well as on a long term vision. It can therefore suppose other programs to embrace the structure. This attempt to transform the abandoned into the new seems beneficial. Pretexting a new program, it creates a melancholic feeling for those living on the ruins of the past.
