-HONOURABLE MENTION of Non Architecture Award Competition | Category: Landscape

The memorial plaza is a field of linear shoal water. And each line of water is engraved with one name from the 304 passengers who we lost in the Sewol sinking, embodied with our remembrance. Lines of water are weaved together in a seemingly anonymous fashion, yet a broader view reveals a strongly directional pattern, where each line of water converges into a single water surface. This perception of the convergence offers a spatial metaphor for the individuality, that we unify into the greatest power through shared beliefs and courage.

Traversing through the plaza, visitors leave their footprint behind. And when time passes by, their footprints dry with air. With the simplest interaction between the space and visitors’ body, the remembrance of the lost and the reflection on the disaster imprints on the everyday life. For a moment, memory becomes tangible. And in that exact moment, our traces converge into a collective memory embodied through the field of footprint. They don’t diminish with the physical absence but become stronger and stronger in our heart.

The underground architectural spaces are guided with light and water – traces that flow in from the above memorial plaza. An Axis connecting the Danwon High and the location of the Sewol Sinking leads visitors through exhibition space, social memory space to the commemoration space, where the convergence of water falls from above, becomes a “blackboard” of water – a canvas of traces.
