Caocun valley, in Zhejiang, China is a flagship landscape preservation project led by the local government. If most of its historical building are gone, the agricultural and natural landscape has been preserved, and the local authorities are aiming to transform it into a cultural attraction. This location has also been famous for its scholars and mandarins, printing crafts and more generally its literacy culture. Since tangible elements were lacking to shows both this agriculture and literacy culture, the villages in the valley built a series of small interventions (a park, a viewing tower, the reconstitution of an academy …)
But right in the middle of the valley sits a one and a half kilometre long aqueducts that crosses the plain from east to west. It gives the valley its dimension, and if its architecture doesn’t impress, nor by its age nor by its constructive qualities, it sits at the right place and the right height to become the central spine for the cultural activities of this valley and address the cultural and touristic agenda of the local government.
Our proposal aims to (1) put the attention on the bridge to the local authorities as it embodies the perfect relationship between landscape and architecture, (2) transforming it into a belvedere and the support of activities to attract tourist. From a mean of transportation (Hermes, the god of communication), we would like to make this piece of infrastructure a public space, a place of contemplation, a place of rest (Hestia, the Goddess of the House) .
As the bridge is relatively narrow (Three meters) we have imagine a series of small modules that could be “plugged” to the bridge to provide: (1) access to the bridges (2) large scale usages on the ground (swimming pool, library, restaurants) and (3), small scale resting areas at the bridge height (sitting, lying, resting).
Project Type: Belvedere/ Services/ Cafés/ Swimming Pool/ bookstores/ gallery
