-FINALIST of Non Architecture Award Competition | Category: Landscape
The convergence of intensely urban elements and degraded natural elements within the site have left it bereft of purpose, identity and ultimately, place. The proposal aims to improve the conditions for people and wildlife alike- creating spaces where both are given space and opportunity to thrive.
A study of 3 elements: Human, Machine and Nature, provides a basis for developing a re-balanced relationship whereby each element is responsive to the others, and presents a new urban narrative- one of balance, reciprocity and play.
The proposed intervention extends over a previously inaccessible and flood-prone area, connecting the adjacent social housing estate to the train station via a safe and vibrant community space that is protected from the elements by the imposing machine highway above. The landscape is terraformed to create a complex system of wetlands and riverine habitats, mitigating flooding effects and providing valuable habitat for wildlife.
Through play, the intervention presents the opportunity for lots of little moments and encounters that create meaning, memories, relationships, and over time, a sense of ownership and belonging.
This gradual build-up of social infrastructure through physical infrastructure lays the groundwork for a community that could be much more diverse, integrated, and resilient than before.
