Roundabouts, especially those that exist in an urban environment, are “dead zones” mainly utilised with decorative intentions to the city front. At the same time, they function as centers of movement, which happens around them, starting with a “ring” of vehicle lanes and most of the times ending in a pedestrian sidewalk. about PlayRound is a proposal that focuses on the creation of a “core within a core”, accumulating all of its functions into a small area in the center of the roundabout, created to fit the example of Volos, a provincial city of Greece. The main intention of the utility program of the proposal is for it to become a place of interaction between it and the visitors, as well as between people themselves; a “playground” build for people of all ages. Words that would describe its potential uses  are “sit”, “rest” or “climb” but approaching the concept as a mere utilitarian construction can be misleading, as the idea behind “about PlayRound” is regarding simply a space to be used, or a space to be experienced. The materials used, as well as the form of the concept are familiar to its environment. The main material being used at the proposal; concrete, can be considered as the cornerstone of the contemporary Greek city.

Project Type:

The structure has three typologies of access. At ground level, there are bike parking racks as well as seating and tables, targeted to every visitor, including those with mobility difficulties. The upper levels are connected to the ground level through the use of staircases. At those two typologies, some planes were added, which are accessible via vertical incline using the holes of the concrete blocks as steps. Two cylindrical handles were added to the aforementioned access points that help at climbing, while boosting the safety of its use. This third typology is meant for a smaller number of people, however it is the manifestation of the structure’s self-purpose, as an architectural space, which is merely meant to be interacted with.
