-HONOURABLE MENTION of War Cities: Utopian and Dystopian Visions Competition
As a living space for humanity an urban environment is composed of architectural artefacts that carry the potential to transform into a utopic or dystopic context. External factors that are manipulated by the man always have a direct effect on cities which triggers spatial shifts in a good or bad manner. In other words, such interventions may result in utopias or dystopias. War as one of such interventions has the most destructive action since it devastates cities in an economic, social, and spatial context. Herein, it is needed to formulate subtle tactics to ensure the reconstruction.
Although architectural elements are vulnerable, they stand out as the most crucial component in the post-war (trans)formation of the urban environment. With this understanding, the project team designed an artefact that connects the utopic and dystopic conditions of the war-torn urban fabric. Accordingly, the design team visualized an urban section that provides an intersection of both scenarios. As a core design principle, the safe corridor is designed as spatial provocative in the post-war urban environment to transform it by veining into the whole fabric and it is formulated as an urban artefact to emphasize the nested spatial relations of utopic and dystopic urban conditions.
