-HONOURABLE MENTION of Re-Draw.04: Centre Pompidou Competition
The Beaubourg main idea isn’t about exposing the structure, the services or their colour system. At first glance these characteristics are almost distracting from the core aim of the building: freeing up the space. Ironically, because of all the noise around, you lose perception of what the core elements performing that role are. In this proposal, we decided to put them on display, rethinking the scales of the components to emphasise significance to the function, while muting down the noise. By doing this, the main focus is on the Gerberette, as the structural element that allows full flexibility inside the building, here turned into the new stage for the main architectural idea of the project: free and flexible space for the people. As the building is essentially a series of assembled components, we stripped it down to what the essence of it is and embraced the assembly of it in a reimagined composition. The components coming together are what makes up the space and creates the functional openness rather than the visual transparency. As a result, the building itself becomes the monumental art piece sitting in the heart of the city of Paris, maybe not fitting in visually, but most importantly, functionally.
