NonA Weekly: MECHANICAL LANDSCAPE ⛓️

Dear readers and friends,

In the next several years, thousands of offshore oil and gas drilling rigs, many of them built during a global construction boom 🏗️ in the 1970s and ’80s, will reach retirement age and require decommissioning. Countries will have to decide whether to sink, remove or repurpose them.
While few proposals have been put in practice, there is no shortage of ideas 🤯 for alternative uses of the platforms: supermax prisons 👮, private homes 🏘️, scuba schools, fish farms 🐟, windmill stations 🌬️.

1. OFFSHORE OIL RIGS TRANSFORMED INTO RADICAL HOUSING 🏠 OF THE FUTURE
XTU architects presents their latest fantastical proposal titled ‘x_lands’. The concept looks at life after oil 🤔, and in particular, what to do with all the offshore PLATFORMS that have been built in the last century to drill for the earth’s 🌍 natural resources.

2. OFFSHORE OCEAN 🌊 LIVING IN MEGA STRUCTURES BY AI ARCHITECTURE
This AI 🤖 exploration is inspired by oil rigs that have been built to drill 🛢️ for the earth’s natural resources. Since dismantling the PLATFORMS requires a tremendous amount of money 💰, many companies leave the structures on the site.

3. SKYSCRAPER 🏙️ AT SEA
Learn how a massive oil platform is designed and built 🏗️ to last 40 years in the harsh elements of the Gulf of Mexico. This amazing STRUCTURE took thousands of workers 💪 years to construct and stands at an impressive sixteen stories in height, truly making it a skyscraper in the sea 🌊.

4. EXPLORING ⚙️ AN ABANDONED OIL PLATFORM
There are many ABANDONED oil platforms and wells scattered throughout the Gulf Of Mexico often due to companies declaring bankruptcy 💸 and the significant costs to properly decommission and remove them.

5. THE NEW USE FOR ABANDONED OIL RIGS 🤯
There are more than 12,000 offshore oil and gas PLATFORMS worldwide 🌍. As they drain their reservoirs of fossil fuels below the sea, they eventually become defunct ☠️ when they produce too little fuel for extraction to be profitable 🤑 to their operators.

6. WHY WE SHOULD LEAVE OLD OIL RIGS IN THE SEA 🤔
Why can’t we leave man-made STRUCTURES 🏗️in the sea and thereby save the cost of removal and recycling? That would be a big win for the public purse. However, to do that, we would have to test the pillars of sustainability: the economy 💰, environment 🍃 and society 🧑‍🤝‍🧑.

7. THE AFTERLIFE 💀 OF OLD OFFSHORE OIL RIGS
Miles away from the shore in the open ocean 🌊 stands an oil platform towering above the water like a skyscraper 🏙️. There is little oil left in the well beneath it, and the platform is nearing the end of its working lifespan.

Stay creative and see you all next week! 👋
