-FINALIST of Powerless City Competition
Our rendering is half a city block and its surrounding expansiveness. In our envisioned future, the primary source of energy is solar. Solar panels are found on roofs of buildings, in the windows, store awnings, and beyond the city boundary, providing multiple opportunities to harvest the sun’s power. Secondary energy sources include windmills in the distance and simple acts of city living.
Unique to our design is the emphasis of duality or shared space. The solar panels in the expansiveness act as both an energy source and protect crops from the glare of the sun. The playground doubles as a space for community connection and energy generation through the equipment. The expansive network of biking and walking trails is a means of transportation and energy generation. The trail paths use emerging technology from the European nightclub scene, in which dance floors harness the energy generated by the motion of dancing.
Even energy demand reduction is considered. The green spaces on buildings serve as an opportunity to cool buildings while also benefiting the environment. The incorporation of ancient African and Middle Eastern’s wind chimneys to cool apartment buildings lessens the energy demand, but provides an interesting architectural detail.
