The project will support the village in building an early childhood centre in the middle of the barren desert of Turkana, Kenya. I studied ice houses in ancient times about how to cool down the interior space. Moreover, the facade was designed combining with their tribal patterns and colours. The patterns were created with mud bricks based on the idea that elephants used mud to cool themselves down under the hot sun. Ancient Africans put that idea in their architectural style while using earth as material, which also takes less effort and human sources to build. As for the interior, I designed modular furniture with vivid colours, allowing flexibility based on the activities.
As indigenous people are Nilotic people, Africa and Egypt have much in common in architectural construction and technology, and designs date back thousands of years, such as vaults. Therefore, the pink canopy comes from the colour of the orchid- the national flower of Kenya. Finally, I named the project ‘Desert Flower‘, while ‘flower’ means life- it is an architecture that brings life to this barren land.
