-HONOURABLE MENTION of Non Architecture Award 2022 Competition | Category: Architecture & Interiors
The project is located within the walls of the Arsenale of Venice that can be interpreted as a machine capable of adapting and transforming over time; initially it was made up of several public squeri located around the city which were like fragments with a single purpose: to produce boats.
The project aims to maintain the Arsenale’s ability to change according to needs and give this space back to residents who increasingly see tourism taking away vital places from the city.
Three elements are valued, that are the main characteristics of the squeri and which have characterized the formation of the Arsenale: being public spaces, being able to adapt and transform over time and being parts of a whole that has a single function.
To bring debate and culture back to the most residential district of Venice, it was decided to design a theatre, as this has a great social value. The theatre has been divided into three fragments that take up the formation of the squeri and the spatial characteristics of three iconic elements of Venice which today no longer belong to the city: Punta delle Dogana, Piazza San Marco and Rialto bridge.
These three devices are held together by arbitrary rules that define the system: each episode has a specific scenography, a view through which it relates to the context.
Through these fragments, the project area is conceived as an Arsenale on a smaller scale: a machine that produces culture.
