SPORT CITY

TEAM: Daegeon Jeong, Korea – Sylvia Soohee Choi, US/Korea – JeongChoi Works

Before the industrial revolution, physical activities had mingled with people’s everyday life as a way of producing food, making goods, and protecting from enemies. Physical activities were inevitable. After urbanization and industrialization, the amount of daily physical activities significantly reduced due to the development of technology and auto-mobilization. Everyday activities are not enough to maintain health and physical fitness. As a result, sports facilities, such as a gym, fitness center and health club have been started spreading throughout modern cities.

What would people’s everyday life be in the future? All physical activities, movements and labors will be no longer required in a daily routine. Manual labors will be replaced by technologies. Communication will be possible over wireless media. All goods and food will be home delivered. To maintain people’s life physically active, physical activities will have to be inevitably performed regularly. We suggest incorporating sport facilities into city infrastructures, by transforming streets, pavements and parks into sports grounds, swimming pools, ski slopes and running tracks. Instead of selectively using physical facilities, physical activities will be easily integrated into daily routine.

The Water Wing

TEAM: Rafaela Agapito, Thaylini Luz, Miguel Pereira – Brazil – Cora Atelier
The Water Wing:

Of all sports facilities placed at public urban areas those that include pools are a rarity. Thus, in a utopian exercise it was created a public urban system dedicated to watersports in the capital of Brazil, Brasilia. The system transgresses the urban plan of the city and composes with the south and the north wing of the pilot plan with the intention of creating a new wing per say, though not for cars but for water: The Water Wing.

Brasilia, the federal district, recently received the title of the World Water Capital*, ironically, the city is known as being practically a desert. Between the months of June and September the weather becomes so dry, that all the green fields become brown and citizens start placing bowls of water around the house for humidity purposes. The Water Wing is a 12km elevated pool for sports, fitness and recreational purposes, where all bodies are welcome –  sick, fit, rich, poor, old, young and Olympic – with the purpose of displaying water sports as an urban installment and transform Brasilia in a truly water capital, whilst humidifying parts of the city.

*This nomination means the country will undertake the work of social mobilization and political and institutional involvement in water issues for the World Water Forum in 2018.

Playground Rules

TEAM: Matt Busscher, Peter Schlosser – United States of America

The city is your playground

Playground Rules is a critique on the typical ways people train and the architecture that supports these activities.  Most sports facilities are single buildings designed to house a wide range of training activities.  This creates highly specialized architecture where a single building must host all of the programmatic complexities that go into modern sports training.  The goal of Playground Rules is to decentralize this traditional model and instead disperse all of those programs throughout the city to create an interconnected system of architectural follies, sports fields, parks, and other interactive interventions that foster physical interaction.  Playground Rules is a departure from the modern understanding of training as a pseudo-scientific activity that focuses on optimization and instead works to return to the idea of playing, with movements such as jumping, running, ducking, swinging, and climbing.  The dispersal of these interventions creates opportunities to constantly engage and be active as one travels throughout the city.  People have the opportunity to be passively active and engage each intervention individually or use them like an interconnected network where the movement between them is equally as integral to training as the activities of the specific interventions.
