Of course, how could we get to the end of the lock-down without talking about social distancing, but in our own special way.

Extremes situations call for extreme measures, but can also trigger extremely inventive and inspiring new ideas, as long as we are curious and ready to experiment.

1. EMPTY CITIES
Who lives in big cities, and knows them as busy and noisy places, has had the weirdest time walking around in complete emptiness and silence. The New York Times published a selection of pictures by their photographers around the world, THE GREAT EMPTY.

2. PUBLIC SPACES
How can we deal with the public space we’re all entitled to enjoy but at a distance? HUA HUA Architects’ proposal transforms our streets and squares in ONE BIG RESTAURANT, encouraging a safe experience of eating out while helping the gastro businesses.

3. CONTACTLESS URBANISM
MVRDV started a very interesting VIDEO SERIES as a research tool to decode the spatial implications of a post-corona world. Their first video is dedicated to the scale of the individual, our PERSONAL SPACE. Please note that Enno Zuidema, Director and Urban Planner at MVRDV, is one of the Jurors of our competition HEALING.

4. SOCIAL DISTANCING GADGETS
There are so many challenges in learning to live at a distance, but we already see interesting experiments and gadgets to simplify our interactions, such as HANDY, a multi-purpose tool created to avoid touching directly surfaces.

5. FINE DINING
Designer Cristophe Gernigon brings social distancing to a whole new level with these elegant yet surreal SUSPENDED SHIELDS. Interesting idea, but not quite as cosy as the GREENHOUSES with canal view at Mediamatic Restaurant in Amsterdam.

6. NEED A HUG?
This crowd-founding initiative is called HUG-SHIELD, and has been design by a mother and daughter to enable getting closer in a safe way, especially with people belonging to risk groups.
