Non Architecture wants to reinvent spatial design by questioning the base, fundaments and conventions of an architect’s work. With an international team and a design community of thousands of people, Non Architecture develops initiatives, mediums, and projects to explore innovative design solutions and experimental collaboration models.
Non Architecture is everything that is not architecture, yet.
It’s a non-discipline, a space for freedom and adventure, a place for broken rules and willing mistakes. Non Architecture is collective intelligence, it’s an anti-star system, it’s the 98% of world architects addressed by Frank Gehry with a middle finger in 2014.
Also, Non Architecture is concrete. Today it’s a portal for design contests, an open-source online journal, an independent publisher and a remote design studio.
NON ARCHITECTURE COMPETITIONS
Non Architecture Competitions aims to find unconventional and unexplored design solutions in the field of architecture. From 2016 to 2019, Non Architecture organized a series of 10 competitions pointed at reinventing functional architectural typologies. In 2020, we entered a new phase structured around nine themes, building a Research Ecosystem with the purpose of exploring each theme from different perspectives and multiple competitions. They will all have their focus on tackling the big issues of tomorrow, by seeking non-traditional approaches in the architect’s work.
NON ARCHITECTURE JOURNAL
Non Architecture Journal is an open container to engage Non Architectural content in a freeway. Within the framework of the journal, we share content from the Non Architecture community and tailored insights from our editorial team. The Journal plays a role in the Non Architecture Research Ecosystem by aligning its editorial line to the themes of the ongoing contests and providing useful inspiration for the designers involved. It also acts as an accessible legacy and ever-going discussion once the competitions are over.
NON ARCHITECTURE STUDIO
Non Architecture Studio is a department for non-profit commissions and unsolicited projects. Some of the most relevant issues that emerged in our research are framed and properly developed in the studio. Guerrilla architecture, projects without clients, without limits. Innovation and creativity to challenge the status quo of architectural commissions with unexplored alternatives.
The studio engages the Non Architecture community, forming design teams in partnership with peers and affiliate organizations. According to different topics and projects, teams will be formed through open calls or direct selection from the pool of designers that participated in the competitions.
COMPETITIONS AS A TOOL FOR RESEARCH
For Non Architecture competitions are much more than just an architectural exercise, they are a valuable tool to challenge and involve talented designers from all around the world in collective research.
The most interesting submissions of each competition are in fact collected into a book, and enriched with essays and graphic materials from our community. As a result, each book becomes a vehicle of a Non Architectural perspective on each specific topic, and a condensed version of our open-source research on the topic investigated.
If you want to learn more about our vision you can check out here the introduction to our first Non Architecture book: “Ce n’est pas architecture – This is not architecture”
NON PROFIT NON ARCHITECTURE
Non Architecture, differently than most of the competition platforms, is part of a non-profit organisation. Its only purpose is to encourage and support the creation of brave innovative ideas.
All the funding raised by the platform is used to promote and support those ideas with new projects and initiatives.

Very cool, very open, conceptual, engaging subversion of your typical 'architecture competition.' They seem to be doing quite a bit and at an incredible pace! Keep up the good work.
