-EDITORIAL PICK of Manhattan Wildscraper Competition
What if the future generation of skyscrapers never actually touch the sky? What if, instead, they dig deep into the depths of the earth below, to preserve the land above for nature and humankind? Nesting itself 180 meters below the earth’s surface, the GroundSCRAPER reinvents the traditional skyscraper to rewild a dense urban landscape above.
Located at the corner of W 46th Street and 8th Avenue, the GroundSCRAPER introduces biodiversity to a community that has been without by providing over 3,600m2 of public green space. Tucked underneath the surface is a mix of programming, including retail, food and beverage, residential, and commercial office space. Intersecting this program is a dynamic, undulating atrium that introduces biodiversity and light throughout the GroundSCRAPER ‘s 35 plus floors. Made from recycled woods and soil, each floor can sustain plant life, allowing for the cultivation of various ecosystems.
With the future of biodiversity under threat in Manhattan, it is essential to build underground to preserve the land above, allowing for nature and people to coexist. By reclaiming the urban landscape above and providing new unique experiences with ecology below, the GroundSCRAPER helps to shape a more biodiverse future for New York City and beyond.
