The streets we live in have an impact on our quality of life. People want to have control over their health and have various options to choose from, be able to wander around and be able to have social encounters. The continuing urbanisation makes it necessary to fundamentally shift the focus from motorised traffic to an emphasised focus on pedestrian and cyclists traffic.
The pandemic has shown the importance of well-designed cities to promote the health and well-being of its inhabitants. It has raised awareness for the necessity for a more balanced natural outdoor urban environment, as well as the impact loneliness has on people’s health.
Key components of future proof streets are a green healthy environment, socially and physically safe spaces, new technology in relation to mobility and various hubs scattered as a framework in the streets where the versatile needs of the community are facilitated. Sense of identity is enhanced by giving several options in activities, stimulate social encounters through design and provide variation in ways of moving. In the street of tomorrow we want people to have control over their health, make them feel included and make the city liveable by making it climate proof.
