NonA Weekly: BUILDING NEW WORLDS 🏰

Dear readers and friends,

It is said that the best design solutions are often found when a project comes with a very strict set of parameters ✍️. So it makes sense that virtual environments, with their coded restrictions and rigid rulesets, tend to draw out a particular kind of creative problem-solving ⚙️. Metaverse is inspiring designers to experiment with constructing virtual cities without the fear of causing real-life consequences. In turn, these creations have inspired new perspectives on real-world designs.

1. HOW ARCHITECTS AND DESIGNERS CAN HELP DEFINE THE METAVERSE ✏️

There are nearly as many working definitions 📝 of the metaverse as there are opinions about what it will mean to ARCHITECTS and designers. HOK design and technology leaders share their thoughts on navigating the metaverse.

2. BUILDING BEAUTIFUL WORLDS 🌍

An award-winning game inspired in the world of M.C. Escher, that combines architecture and video games, in which the user journeys through puzzling isometric-perspective spaces. While architecture appears in the background of many games, here architecture takes center stage. A CONVERSATION 🎤 with Ken Wong, the Architect of “Monument Valley”.

3. METACITY / DATATOWN 🏙️

Datatown is based only upon data. It is a CITY that wants to be described by information 💾; a city that knows no given topography, no prescribed ideology, no representation, no context. Only huge, pure data. What are the implications of this city? What assumptions can be identified? What agenda would result from this numerical approach? A PROJECT by MVRDV.

4. BLOCK’HOOD: A CITY BUILDING SIMULATOR 🚧

A neighbourhood-building simulator that challenges the user to create a functioning community out of 1x1x1 blocks of various programs. The interface features bold, stirring graphics from an AXONOMETRIC view. Block’hood taps into the simple desire to play with blocks and makes the blocks’ existence vulnerable to the environmental conditions 🌲 you create.

5. AXONOMETRIC VIEW OF AN URBAN BLOCK 💻

Why not go for a tutorial? 🎥 This VIDEO from Urban Design Lab shows how to make Urban Design Axonometric illustrations in Sketchup and Photoshop.

6. BEST RESIDENTIAL AXONOMETRIC DRAWINGS 🏠

Need some inspiration? We are here to help you with that! ARCHDAILY has compiled a set of 60 axonometric perspectives of residential designs featured in its database 💽. Presented with a variety of line styles, colors, textures, and techniques, these drawings are classified into four different groups to help inspire your next project.

7. METAVERSE AND THE SHIFTING NOTIONS OF PUBLIC SPACES ⛲

It is important to look at the necessary human practices, as those will be either mimicked or new versions of those social and cultural practices will be created: playing 🎮, recreation 🎾, socializing/meeting 🍸, conducting business 💼, working 💻, planning 📅 and creating groups 👩‍👧‍👧, celebrating life events ✨ and even festivals 🎊. HERE are some thoughts about it!

Stay creative and see you all next week! 👋
