Dear readers and friends,
As we continue to face the pressing challenges of environmental 🏞️ degradation and resource depletion, the importance of designing 📐 and constructing 🚧 buildings with a focus on material 🧱 circularity has never been greater. At the heart of this concept is the idea of creating a closed-loop system ♻️, where resources are continually reused, reducing waste and preserving our planet’s finite resources 🌍. In this edition, we will explore the latest trends, innovations, and best practices in material circularity in architecture 🏛️, and showcase inspiring examples of how architects and designers 👷 are leading the way towards a more sustainable future 🔮.
The CONSTRUCTION industry 🏗️ is the elephant in the room when it comes to emissions and pollution. The shift toward a more circular economy is an imperative step in reducing 📉 global greenhouse emissions and environmental pollution.
A widely discussed topic lately, the circular economy encompasses a whole production ⚒️ and consumption system which pursues the reuse of existing MATERIALS as long as possible. However, how does this ongoing concept involve architecture, design and its aesthetics? 🤔
3. WHAT DO WE DO WITH WASTE? 🗑️
A lot of people around the world would agree that we are currently in a climate emergency 🚨. A circular economy redefines the way the world CONSUMES 🛒 and produces both goods and services.
4. HOW TO DESIGN ✍️ A BUILDING ON CIRCULAR ECONOMY PRINCIPLES
With the construction industry 🏗️ responsible for around 60% of total WASTE, the need for a more sustainable, ‘circular economy’ approach is clear and urgent. But what does it mean in practice to design a building on circular economy principles? 💭
5. CIRCULAR BUILDINGS: CONSTRUCTING A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE 🌱
This PUBLICATION 📝 explores how circular economy concepts can help tackle the challenges the sector faces, supporting the transition towards a more sustainable and futureproof buildings sector 🏙️.
6. ARCHITECTURE 🏛️ AND THE CIRCULAR ECONOMY
Architecture as an industry is not the most environmentally friendly. Aside from the immense reliance on concrete – a devastating contributor ☢️ to carbon emissions – the industry also has a serious WASTE problem, particularly given that so many projects involve the demolition 🔨 of previous structures on the site.
7. HOW CIRCULAR IS THE CURRENT DESIGN PRACTICE? 👀
The transition to a circular economy (CE) produces a range of new challenges for DESIGNERS and requires specific knowledge 🧠, strategies, and methods. The aim of this study is to provide a better understanding of how design practitioners interpret and implement the CE concept in practice.
Stay creative and see you all next week! 👋
