NonA Weekly: GROWING TOGETHER 🌱
Dear readers and friends,
The future of farming 🚜 will undoubtedly be shaped by a range of factors, including climate change 🌍, population growth 🧑🤝🧑, and technological advancements 🤖. One key aspect of this future will be the role of architecture in supporting and enhancing agricultural practices 👨🌾. Architects and designers are already exploring innovative ways to integrate farming into urban environments 🏙️, such as through rooftop gardens and vertical farms. These structures not only provide fresh produce 🥕 for city dwellers but also help to mitigate the environmental impact of traditional farming practices 🏭. As such, the future of farming 🌾 will see an increasing emphasis 📈 on the integration of architecture 🏛️, technology 💻, and sustainability ♻️ to meet the needs of a growing population while protecting 💪 our planet’s natural resources.
As the global population becomes more urban, cities are investing in more local 🍋 FOOD production systems that offer economic 💰 development opportunities and reduce a city’s carbon footprint.
2. WHY URBAN FARMS AND INDOOR PLANTING ARE THE FUTURE? 🤔
Do you know what urban FARMS are? Have you ever thought about growing your own food 🌱 at home in your garden or in specialized freezers? Transporting food 🚚 for consumption in cities is one of the major environmental (and financial) pollution problems in the world today.
3. FOOD 🍽️ FOR THE FUTURE POPULATION
Vertical farming systems enable agriculture to be implemented in cities 🏙️, allowing more compact production to increase both FOOD 🍅 safety and accessibility. It makes soilless agriculture possible with different technological systems developed.
4. ENVISIONING FUTURE FOOD SYSTEMS 👀
In the past decade, as new aesthetics of “artisanal” food production circulated in architectural and popular media, architects responded with a bevy of proposals for urban farms 🌾. To participate in FOOD systems transformation, architects and designers can learn from a growing 📈 body of policy research, as well as from food growers and workers 👨🌾 who have on-the-ground expertise in food production and its challenges.
5. 8 ARCHITECTURE FIRMS LEADING 🏅 THE URBAN FARMING REVOLUTION
Everyday it becomes clearer that the way we live and consume poses a massive threat ☠️ to our health and the health of our ecosystems. Urban agriculture or urban FARMING functions to bring the practice of growing 🌱, processing and distributing food 🚚, along with nurturing vegetation, in or around urban areas.
6. WHAT IS AGRITECTURE? 💭
In practice, architects and urban farmers incorporate agriculture into the surrounding city environment 🏙️ in very different ways. Architects frequently design impossible 🤯 vertical FARMING and urban agriculture concepts that ignore the realities of successful farming operations.
7. FOOD SYSTEMS & AGRICULTURE IN A TIME OF GLOBAL CRISIS 🌐
UN Foundation’s Managing Director for Climate and Environment, Ryan Hobert, explains 📣 why food and AGRICULTURE innovation is essential to solving the climate challenge, and why it will garner increased 📈 global attention in the year ahead.
Stay creative and see you all next week! 👋
