-HONOURABLE MENTION of Waste Pavilion Competition
Inferno pavilion is a climate manifesto against plastic waste pollution. To illustrate the tragedy of the situation we find ourselves in, the project refers to the poem ‘Inferno’ by Dante Alighieri, which was written for medieval society as a warning against evil. The project, which is a parasitic creature, is located in the historical site of St Mark’s Square in Venice. It is the capital of Carnival and as a result, anonymity allowing each person to feel less responsible for their actions, in this case – using plastic. Instead of ending up in a landfill far away the city, the big ball of rubbish ends up in the city centre and shines with visibility. A fear-provoking shape simultaneously repel and invite the public. Exploring the circles of the pavilion will allow the user to learn about the consequences of using plastic on living organisms, and to discover substitute materials. The transparency of the sphere is obtained from PET bottles and the structure is made from PVC pipes used to transport water. The inner black sphere is made of LDPE film, which is covered with a fungus that feeds on plastic, and will gradually decompose the pavilion through the ages.
