-HONOURABLE MENTION of Waste Pavilion Competition
For this project I used recycled timber as a building material and built it in a mortise and tenon construction ‘building block’ style.
Creative Concept:
For this project I used recycled timber as a building material and built it in a mortise and tenon construction ‘building block’ style.
I wanted to create a resting pavilion in the heart of the city where people could feel nature and relieve themselves after a busy day, so I intended to use wood as a material. Wood has a natural ambience and is recyclable, so using recycled wood as a material will also reduce some of the construction waste.
With the theme of ‘reducing waste in construction’, it was hard not to think about using recycled materials. It is true that using recycled materials as a solution is effective, but it is inevitable that the building will be demolished one day. Once a building built from recycled materials is demolished, the materials may still be discarded and it is difficult to reuse them three times. So I have tried to start with this problem and come up with a more fundamental solution.
Building structure:
Flower Shaped Chair
Cylindrical Material:
The simpler the shape, the more possibilities there are for combinations.
Tenon:
No screws, nails, etc.
Easy disassembly and assembly
Easy to move the location of the building after disassembly
Timber:
Natural
Lighter than other building materials
Easy to move the location of the building
Building Blocks:
Easy & Fun
Can be combined into any shape as required
Material Size Structure:
Carving the mortise and tenon structure along the wood grain
Small size lowers wood recycling standards
Each piece of wood is about 2kg, women can easily use it
Furniture:
After the demolition of the building, the materials are also intact. People can assemble materials into other objects like building blocks. For example, tables, chairs, bookcases, beds and other furniture continue to be used.
