Matéricos Periféricos is an independent cultural movement created in 1997 by students and professors from the School of Architecture of Rosario, Argentina. The movement’s objectives are: to support emerging Latin American architectures, to intellectually and actively contribute to the development of the theory and practice in architecture; and, to offer the discipline as a service for those sectors of population most affected by socio-economical, political and cultural inequities.
A place for the word. 2007
The constructions here presented were conceived as integral part of the curriculum of Architectural Design at the School of Architecture at Rosario University. We understand those practices as the branch of the university able to direct impact on the territory, since they have been made within the real social and physical context, and at full size. We advocate for generating the conditions to feed, and articulate teaching-learning processes, research, socio-community work, and university extension, all fields of education traditionally separated.

The title Architecture as collective and placed action refers to a conception of education and professional practice in architecture able to overcome the over-value of individual success, and the solely speculative field of representation. Our work is made at 1:1 scale, and as a collaborative physical and intellectual experience among students, teachers, and social organizations. We understand local territories (tangible and intangible) as legitimate interactive platforms from where to learn and identify emergent phenomena−that is, construction of knowledge. Through those constructions matéricos perféricos synthesizes that reciprocal (cultural and material) knowledge−developed from interaction with local territories−in the field of social production of architecture.

Matéricos perféricos contributes to the paradigm of integral production of knowledge at the university formulated by the Reforma del 18, driven by Decreto 29.337 in 1949, determining free tuition and unrestricted access to the university, and particularly promoted by Argentinian Minister of Education since 2003. The implementation of several national programs such as, University Volunteers, University Social Responsibility, University Extension, Technological Involvement, and Solidarity Practices in Superior Education−in combination with the rising budget up to 6.5% of GDP−have strengthened , in the past 11 years, the process of mutual engagement between territory and university, and consequently, enlarged the perspective of the Argentinian university’s capacity of production, direct impact, and pedagogical innovation.
