-HONOURABLE MENTION of SOCIAL DISTANCING HOUSING BLOCK Competition
Our project grew from a common question during confinement: what about the homeless?
On the fringe of society, those we consider to be ‘free electrons’ have inspired us to establish a system of organization derived from that of the atom.
Unique permanent point, the double spiral staircase facilitates the respect of social distancing within the building. In the event of quarantine of cell(s), one flight of stairs can be reserved for medical staff and the other can be used by non-contaminated inhabitants, without disturbing general functioning.
Gravitating around this rigid core, the cells, private housing units, are designed as a kit, fully flexible. ‘Furniture walls’ and ‘technical walls’ have been designed to address essential needs: sleeping, eating, working, washing, securing belongings, practicing physical activity, accessing an outdoor space, isolating yourself. Depending on the hosting needs and activities, the space changes throughout the day.
In the overall axonometry, we propose a possible organization, containing common spaces meeting the needs of nourishing, working, learning and creating, without leaving the building.
Finally, the building envelope is conceived as a layer of vegetation, in which the inhabitants can wander, access nature and fresh air, symbolizing the passing time and widening the horizon.
