-COMMUNITY AWARD of SOCIAL DISTANCING HOUSING BLOCK Competition
Alchemy is a process of transformation, creation and combination. In this project, we have tried to alchemize a residence for a new normal by channeling healing through architecture. The main concept of the project centers around the creation of physical voids, an essential aspect of the required physical-distancing norms in a pandemic society. The amalgamation of the voids is done through open-plan public spaces with sufficient cross- ventilation and biophilia, which tackles issues concerning contamination and encourages safe social interactions.
The residence was built, keeping in mind the need of low-cost housing for localities like the slums that require a better quality of living spaces, now more than ever. The carpet area of each unit has hence been reduced but to ensure the maximum utilization of space, each unit has been treated as a living creature, constantly growing and metamorphosing, as per need. The open-to-air balconies, act as a flexible spaces and can be used for different activities at different times throughout the day, as well as provide opportunities for distanced interactions with the neighbors. The voids created by the organization of the units, act as spaces of growth for both physical and mental well-being.
