-EDITORIAL PICK of Waterless World Competition
Xylematic Terrains aims to prototype the decentralisation of water treatment, whilst reinventing the conventional water infrastructure typology into a site-scaled intervention that seeks to regenerate the waterfront. The programmes are driven by water-based productive and recreational activities, where water purification modules combine phytoremediation water treatment with agricultural production, whereas adjacent platforms and pools serve recreational purposes, such as play. Placing water production in immediate proximity to agricultural production, enables the proposal to reconsider sustainable modes of co-production related to water, whilst engaging the larger community with these processes and establishing a sense of mutual responsibility through these productive activities.
The intervention also serves to provide marine habitats for aquatic life through the incorporation of a dense scaffolding system.
The water purification modules make use of a series of buoy-powered pistons which generate the electricity for the phytoremediation processes. These buoys are also activated through the use of see-saws, enabling the public to directly participate in the production of energy. Phytoremediation enables for the removal of pollutants present in the water body, which is then redistributed to the pools and for use in the hydroponic planters. The modules also have the capacity to adapt to various urban settings and configurations.
