Between Here and There
by Abhaya Rajani & Sam McNeil
It’s easy to feel alone when society is laid out flat to you,
Hiding, penned off, in the corner of two axis,
Neighbours become residents, friends become numbers,
But remember that we are all artists,
Creators, composers of threads that flow between us,
A world of connections that break through dimensions,
And now, in a time of solitude,
When we’ve endeavoured to seek and find one another,
It appears we do not need to share physical space
We can share words, memory and identity,
Save these spirits, store them in vessels,
Vessels made of clay, canvas and concept,
Birthed from dry hands, passed from palm to palm,
Through art, we tear down the walls that separate peers,
Each turn of imagination a fold in reality that brings us closer,
Up to earshot, arm’s-reach,
So that we may pass around our ideas and perspectives, our egos,
And receive the same from those who now surround us,
Each gift the opening of a new pair of eyes,
The forming of relationships untied to time and space,
In and around those boundaries of our making, of race, gender and age,
A future of living together is a future of creating together,
Know that we can do more than drink the same water,
Eat the same food,
Live in between the same sun and earth,
When we can inhale the same air
Exhale our own voices,
And hear infinite echoes.
