-BEST AMSTERDAM SITE of Community 2050 Competition | Category: Professional
OMA’s original master plan had grand aspirations for its residents: scenic waterfront views, spacious parks and gardens, a participative public realm shaped by its communities. However, in today’s context of WFH, compact mixed-use neighbourhoods and small worlds within a village with over 100 nationalities in Amsterdam Noord, new opportunities must be considered to provide a master plan in the image of its current and future inhabitants.
How will we produce food, knowledge, and health tomorrow? What if these resources could be grown in your own neighbourhood? Would your community’s output be unique and remarkable under this hyper-local model?
The Productive Loop is the community street of the future. It is a mobile, working, living, healing, and creative corridor. Formed by Meeuwenaan Street and the historic and cultural south of the Amsterdam Ring, the Productive Loop will become a designated exhibition of the artifacts and cultural assets produced by its residents.
Moreover, we see Meeuwenaan Street as an exciting stretch of the Productive Loop – stitching together a diverse set of neighbourhoods. Therefore, it becomes the backbone of the site – a lively mediating corridor of activities marked by distinct urban places acting as nodes shaped and coloured by the characters of their connecting communities.
For instance, the marketplace is a food node. It is a festive display and scent garden of hundreds of herbs and fresh produce grown on-site with the latest technologies. A communal food laboratory and cafe houses classes and allows newcomers to set up shop and experiment with neighbours. These seeds of creativity and entrepreneurship have long been present in Amsterdam Noord, which is why it deserves a proper venue.
By forming the Productive Loop, Meeuwenaan Street is anchored into today’s existing active corridor in Amsterdam. As a result, this sister ribbon hosts famous museums, shops, cafés, homes, headquarters, ateliers, and smaller canals. Meeuwenaan connects to the South shore through the Ijplein and Zamenhofstraat ferries. Hence, the waterway is not a separator, but rather a historic and scenic element which ties both sides of the loop together.
Finally, nodes along the Productive Loop will soon spark and support smaller corridors that branch out to create an extensive productive network. These urban venues will act as gateways to neighborhoods and create exciting new venues to explore. And by doing so, the Productive Loop will provide an immersive experience colored by the communities it connects.
