Concept: The concept of “zero” in the scheme comes from “breaking up the whole into parts”. The general idea is to realize the scattered distribution, flexible arrangement and mutual integration of various functions of the city by dissolving the whole separated blocks in the existing city. This proposal is intended to break the clear boundaries of various functional areas of the existing city, The functions of clothing, food, housing and transportation required by life are concentrated around the living function, so as to form an independent community unit. The most obvious change is that each new community will include two contents: Community farms that supply food such as food and vegetables and office places to solve the problem of long-distance work. And set up a vertical farm in the whole research scope(Vertical farm and community farms adopt photovoltaic power generation technology to supply power to the whole community), so that both food supply and jobs can be produced and sold by themselves, forming a self-sufficient closed community, so as to improve the resistance to sudden disasters.

Planning: The whole study area is divided into 12 community units with a radius of 500 ~ 1000m without changing the original urban road framework. Most single buildings take the form of overhead ground floor, which is conducive to the liberation of ground space. The liberated ground space is generally planned into two parts: One is the East-West linear wetland forest park, which connects Zhongshan Park in the west of the community and Dashahe Park in the east to form the park skeleton of north high tech Zone. On the one hand, the planning of linear Wetland Park responds to the requirements of sponge City, on the other hand, it is conducive to creating a natural forest environment, so that people living in the city can have close contact with and feel nature, and improve the living environment with the help of the power of nature. The second is that other areas in the study area except linear Wetland Park are planned as landscape squares with green space rate of no less than 30%, including functions such as rest and sports.

Function: Each community is composed of ring (zero shaped) buildings with different numbers and shapes. Residential and office functions are arranged on the north and south sides of the ring, and commercial, school, hospital and other service functions are arranged from east to west. Therefore, there is only one commercial street between residence and office, and the commuting time will be greatly reduced, so as to give the elderly and children more time to care and accompany.

Transportation: With the emergence of self-sufficient communities, the original road network is only used as transit transportation. The traffic in the community is mainly completed through roof walkways (including non motor vehicles) and corridors between communities. This will help alleviate the current urban traffic  congestion  and carbon emissions.
