-HONOURABLE MENTION of Community 2050 Competition | Category: Professional
Amsterdam is a charming city, this freedom land has developed with rigorous polder planning and the strong dike system against the flooding. The freedom and managements are the soul of Amsterdam, our proposal takes the management of transportation, green space and urban space as the framework to establish a future community model that can be self-sufficient and have an internal social-ecosystem.
The IJplein district is located opposite the bustling Amsterdam train station, some social problems are closely related to the city: many immigrants here cannot enjoy real land equity and the crime rate such as theft is also high. The principal issues are : 1. The lack of connection between the interior and exterior of the block, inaccessibility reduces the vitality; 2. Many fragmented green spaces and low landscape value cannot meet the needs of residents of various ethnic groups; 3. The serious incoherence of the city texture lead to abandoned space which incurs many crimes.
Our proposal plans the block for the future 2050 from three aspects: strengthening connectivity, reorganization of the green space system, and public space planning. In terms of traffic, we reorganized the traffic system and broke the original texture of the street. The huge curved road passes through the Noordhollandsch Channel and extends northward to open up the east-west direction. The ‘Skyline’ passage connects the Vliegenbos park, and the undulating road passes through the renovated roof as a viewing corridor and connects to the cable car, which leads directly to Amsterdam train station. concerning the green network, we suggest a diversification of green space. Vertically from the roof to the ground, a ‘rain garden & urban farm’ system is formed, on the one hand the resilient landscape resists floods and on the other it provides irrigation. At the same time, the waterfront activity space is created, the attractive green axis extends from north to south. In the end, we integrate the fragmented space. Focus on ‘3 minutes’ activity centers of residential areas, ports and commercial areas such as urban market, creating opportunities for neighborhood interaction. Install small solar and wind energy equipment on the roof to achieve community energy sharing.
