-HONOURABLE MENTION of Community 2050 Competition | Category: Open
Amsterdam has always been a low-lying place, and according to research, as sea levels rise, Amsterdam is likely to be submerged in the next 100 years. Water is a resource for human survival, and it often brings destruction. When the sea level rises and the original land sinks to the bottom of the sea, where can we find the space for human survival?
Rising sea levels have brought about abandoning the old and welcoming the new – submerging old buildings and raising new ones. Floating islands are units of floating communities that change according to rising water levels. The floating island group formed by the organic combination of floating islands with different functions, such as living, generating energy, planting, landscape, etc., is a sustainable floating community——Rebirth of the land. The shape of the community is divided into three stages according to the rise of the water level:
a. When the continuous rain causes the city to become waterlogged, the coast extends out the landscape space and water storage landscape devices, and begins to build a floating residential area at the initial stage on the shore; at the same time, the inland area expands the floating parasitic parasites on the periphery of the original building. architecture.
b. When the land is submerged by sea water, the floating houses of low-rise residents whose original buildings were submerged surround the building, and the floating buildings on the coast extend linearly to the inland of the city, connecting with each building to form a connection network; The floating buildings began to develop with high density in the vertical direction. With the development of science and technology, people have begun to use efficient 3D printing technology to recycle marine waste as building materials.
c. When the sea water completely submerged the last tall building in the whole city, the floating island gradually replaced the original building and became a new land for human survival. The distribution of floating communities continues the high-density development of the original buildings in the vertical direction, so there are skyscrapers on the sea and submarine restaurants; traffic limitations make people abandon the use of cars, and promote people to use green and energy-saving walking and cycling Or public transport, for example: drone transport as well as underwater transport channels, aerial cable cars, etc.
Looking back at the history and looking forward to the future, the Great Fire of London in 1666 triggered a revolution in London’s architecture. When the sea floods the city in 2050, can floating islands become a new daily life for people in the future?
