-EDITORIAL PICK of Waste Pavilion Competition
The objective of the pavilion is to raise awareness for the waste which results of the increasing demand for infrastructure both in the private and commercial domain. With an increased adoption of electronic and smart home devices that offer convenience, comfort, and energy efficiency, cable waste also rises. To counteract this trend, we would like to demonstrate how cables could be reused and upcycled in a meaningful yet playful way whilst also rising awareness for the issue. The pavilion consists of a series of platforms. These platforms consist of recycled cables that were formerly used for infrastructure and building purposes or in private households and are woven into knits. The platforms, which differ in size, can be climbed through rope ladders also formed by reused cables. Our intention is to place the pavilion in a heavily frequented intersection. Rather than dividing the space and disturbing the human flows underneath, the pavilion is suspended and creates a new vertical dimension. Therefore, the multilevel platforms provide an alternative vantage point for people to socialise, linger, play and literally recharge their human and electronic batteries.
