-EDITORIAL PICK of Waste Pavilion Competition
The Adaptive Mobile Pavilion is a flexible and sustainable structure inspired by the Rubik’s cube. It is designed to encourage sustainable plastic waste reduction practices in Kampala, Uganda. The pavilion is made from recycled plastic waste and consists of adjustable, foldable, and expandable panels, allowing it to be transformed into various activities such as a community meeting space, kiosks or mobile health clinic. Less than 5% of the 180 tons of plastic produced daily in Kampala is recycled. The pavilion aims to address this issue by recycling plastic waste to create a versatile space that promotes a circular economy. The pavilion’s structural elements can be collapsed or expanded as needed, maximizing space efficiency during transportation and expanding to full size during use. It is shaded with a waterproof and reflective plastic cover supported by a recycled plastic net. The pavilion is powered by renewable energy generated from plastic waste, making it self-sufficient. By combining adaptable design, upcycling plastic materials, and community empowerment, the Adaptive Mobile Pavilion reimagines waste management and promotes sustainable practices.
