-EDITORIAL PICK of HEALING Competition
Social inequality, loneliness, immobility: these were the words flooding our everyday lives during the weeks of quarantine. Forced to stay indoors, we painfully observed how what we considered almost human rights, like access to greenery, sunlight and fresh air, turned into a luxury often available only to the privileged few. Our proposal embraces a scenario where residents are quarantined in small clusters of blocks, and introduces a usable and uplifting outdoor setting to help battle the aforementioned pressing issues. The installation of a set of elevated meandering pathways at alternating proximities ensures safe interaction, while simultaneously transforming the repetitive buildings’ roofs into a green and diverse environment. The chill, sports and adventure tracks target specific users, suggesting appropriate speeds and activities along their one-way routes. The variety of platforms protruding from the thematic paths allows residents to find some personal space and exercise, relax, play and work in a safe but dynamic environment. Providing a space for holistic healing both for the residents and for the monotonous urban tissue by introducing diversity, colour and identity, our proposal takes a strong stand for the importance of equality of access to outdoor space for securing the welfare of quarantined communities.
