Cities, since their consolidation as major human settlements, have been the antonym of wild nature, as they have become into extensive structures in which vegetation is treated like a kind of urban sculpture. Even though, the quarantine period has shown us the potential that this scarce vegetation has in order to improve the quality of our public space.
Umberto Boccioni anticipated a century ago what the Industrial Revolution brought to the urban environments. Cities, by their own definition, require from buildings and service and supply facilities so that they can work out as metabolic organisms. They require from small businesses that guarantee their everyday activity, the citizens move along the territory in the most efficient possible way and our living demands smart energy systems and waste management, to be improved along with technological research. Even though, their existing design permits alternative configurations.
Trees and trams are compatible, only if there is a real will of transforming our built environment and understanding that our current urban vices must end. It is not about nature nor children playgrounds, it is about making our cities better.
